The sessions have really changed my skill set and way of thinking when dealing with all of the unexpected challenges we get in life. From someone who had very little experience In counselling or anything like it, I would highly recommend it to anyone especially seeing you. I don’t want to say I’m a new person from it I’d say I’m actually just a much better equipped version of myself and much happier. For anyone on the fence about using the Abingdon counselling I would say just be brave and Jump into it, commit and be open to it all and you’ll never look back.

After a number of personal stresses combined with work stress, I decided to swallow my pride and start therapy. I can say that this was a much needed action even though I didn’t realise it at the time. The opportunity to voice my concerns aloud to an impartial therapist worked wonders. Although I was hesitant at the start, I started to look forward to my weekly sessions with John as an opportunity to unburden myself and take on the tools needed to move forward to start to smooth out the bumps in life. John is a fantastic listener and hearing back my only comments from a different person really crystallised where the issues lay. I would wholeheartedly recommend John to anyone who is in need of help and/or support in taking control over their life once again.

I contacted John after the perfect storm of a health situation and a big reconsideration of my career and priorities, when I felt a little overwhelmed and untethered. I liked his website and the way he talked about his approach. In our in-person sessions, I found John a good listener, good at reflecting back his understanding of what I’d said to check it was accurate, and both insightful and compassionate in his responses to what I brought up. At the end of our course of sessions together, I felt I had more clarity about what I wanted my way forward to be, and am very grateful for his support in helping me get there.

I went to John at a time when I was suffering from very severe anxiety as a result of my wife's illness. John's listening skills, empathy and careful questioning helped me to work through this.

I continued seeing John to address some more long-standing issues. He helped me to identify and challenge some inappropriate thinking, and I am now able to move forward with confidence. I'm truly grateful.

My sessions with John were revelatory. A safe space to unpack my past… reflect on its many repercussions, to understand myself and others with kindness and compassion. I may be the sum of my past but it doesn’t define my future. Ultimately and with joy I now realise and relish knowing that I have choices, that we all have choices.

John was a very good choice, he made a difference where other counselling didn’t , I couldn’t recommend him more highly.

John guided me through a particularly bad period of conflicting family loyalties. I was emotionally drained by the anger of loved ones. I blamed myself and had lost my self-esteem; but with patience and understanding, John helped me to rebuild my strength and confidence.

He helped me to unpack and find new perspectives on these past events, enabling me to start a process of acceptance and to move out of my depression. John was professional at all times and always managed to show empathy whilst helping me to explore my own assumptions and views. John helped me in a very difficult period when I was suffering from depression, addiction and crippling stress. Over the course of several months of kind and insightful interactions, he helped me in understanding why I felt so trapped, and how to find my way back to my positive and confident self. Two years later I am in a very happy and healthy place and John's help was crucial in achieving this. Thank you very much!!!

Sessions with John were very helpful and we covered a number of tricky topics in our conversations. He is a great guy and very easy to talk to, putting you at your ease from the start - a very calm and patient listener but gives sensible advice and asks some challenging questions that give a different perspective on your own thoughts. Many thanks John!

My experience with John Bristow was great. Very good at dealing with some deep-seated issues that I was unable to confront on my own, as well as giving me effective strategies to deal with anxiety and depression. Would highly recommend it to anyone seeking counselling.

I was in a pretty low place when I first starting seeing John at Abingdon Counselling. Over time, and through weekly sessions with him in a relaxed environment, he made me challenge my thoughts and gave me the strength to replace the negatives with positives. I really felt like being accountable to someone other than a loved one was a real help.  If you've ever thought you may need someone to talk to, then I really recommend John at Abingdon Counselling.

I fully enjoyed the sessions. We did some deep exploration of my themes and ideas and this enabled me to gain a better awareness

And did it work?

You will know as human beings we are such complicated things and in later life have accumulated a lot of baggage!

So yes I think I did grow and change in our time and made some measurable steps on my future journey

Knowing when to ask for help is as important as knowing whom to ask. When I turned to John my life was in an utterly desperate state. Through multiple discussions I was given space and time to discuss my concerns and emotions. From our sessions my marriage improved, I found a sense of contentment, my career improved and I now see my life as being filled with happiness. John is a truly wonderful person, professional, kind, patient, compassionate and an exceptional listener.  If you're reading this, and seeking help then I can offer you nothing more than: My life is better from my sessions with John.

John Bristow , helped me through my addiction issues and relapse and reducing methadone, I found him relatable, professional, caring and looked forward to our sessions together each week. I also worked on my depression and PTSD related issues and issues stemming from relationships and homelessness with him, and found our sessions a great foundation before I got back into recovery and am looking forward to working together in the future in my recovery
